Cabinets / Shelving

There are so many solutions with cabinets and shelving.  We’ll have more information coming soon as well as specific products you can order.

Cabinets provide a clean, orderly look and stores items behind closed doors, so a little disorder isn’t so apparent.  You also have greater options, like laundry cabinets, sliding shelves and drawers. Shelving allows you an “at-a-glance” view but we recommend a labeling or order system and the use of totes, bins or baskets in conjunction.

Pricing can range from fairly inexpensive, assembly-yourself to high-end quality cabinets and custom solutions made for your space.

Bins / Totes / Baskets

You can’t go wrong with a selection of bins, totes and baskets.  They can be used for many things from sorting the contents of your tack room for your re-organization to serving as laundry hampers that are easily transported.  Storing supplies in organized, labeled bins, totes or baskets provides easy access for both day-to-day and off-season storage.  Looks for sales at local home stores.

Peg Board & Hooks

Peg Board comes in a variety of colors including white and installs easily (make sure you mount away from the wall to allow for hooks).  Hooks are inexpensive and come in many different styles for easy storage and accommodates to changing requirements.  We added thin decorate trim to the seams to divide the space and enhance the appearance.

Slat Wall

Slat Walls also come in a variety of colors as well as in full wall size and single rail.  Many different accessories are available from hooks to baskets.  Slat Walls work great in barn or trailer tack rooms.

10 Steps to Organization

1.      Sort

2.     Evaluate

3.     Requirements

4.     Theme

5.     Develop a Plan

6.     Order / Purchase Product

7.      Transition Timetable

8.     Move Tack Room Contents

9.     Install and Organize Space

10. Enjoy

  1. Sort

The first step to an organized tack space is to set aside time to sort and evaluate what you have.

We recommend using multiple bins or piles, labeled:  Keep, Clean or Repair, Donate, Toss, Consign, Undecided .  Knowing what you want to keep will help in developing an organized space.

  1. Evaluate

What works and what doesn’t? – cabinets, storage, bridles and saddle racks.  What’s missing?  Do you need more room for blankets, a place to hang coats?

 TOH Tools:

                                Questionnaire

  1. Requirements

If you have three saddles on a single rack, do you need more space for saddles OR fewer saddles.  Review your requirements.  Write it down.  Then develop a plan accordingly.

Questionnaire

 Grid Paper

  1. Theme

Do you have a favorite color, design preference (hunt scenes).  Go with it – it’s easy to do and there is no reason you can’t combine functional with eye-pleasing with very little additional effort.

  1. Develop a Plan

After reviewing the various options, requirements, existing storage, and budget, what do you want?  Make a list.  Draw out your space.  Measure.   Think about how you use the space.  Do you gather all your equipment and put it in a grooming stall, do you saddle first and then go back for the bridle?  What’s important to you, less important, what annoys you that requires  a solution (blankets on the floor, no place for leg wraps).

  1. Order / Purchase Product

There are many choices for organization products, ranging from horse specific products to general purpose.  The Organized Horse has evaluated and continues to evaluate all types of organizational products.  We manufacturer our own line of bridle, saddle and saddle pad racks as well as whip holders – all with distinct equine designs and equestrian requirements in mind.   We also keep a resource book of all the various options and pricing and will make recommendations based on your requirements, preferences and budget through our Services Packages.

  1. Transition Timetable

The process of updating and organizing your Tack Space will require time, but the end result will be worth it.  You know best how you work by either dedicating a weekend to the project or scheduling smaller amounts of time over the course of several weeks.  It’s best to take the time to think about a schedule and then set-aside that time to get this important project done.

TOH Tools:

Service Packages – Recommendations & Hand-on Assistance

  1. Move Tack Room Contents

Move everything out of the tack room so you have a clean, empty space.  Take the time to do repairs.  It’s very easy to install 1” x 6” T&G, Bead Board, Peg Board, HOSS Grids or Slat Walls and much easier to do it in an empty space.  Use your feed room, trailer or garage to store items – bins and totes come in handy again, along with labels – for this transitional time.  Another option would be to temporarily hang a HOSS grid or peg board for easy access.

  1. Install and Organize Space

Install your storage items OR schedule installation, which is available for some items such as Cabinets.  This is the fun part!  It all coming together!

 Regular Reviews

Don’t let all your hard work go to waste by relapsing into old habits.  Schedule regular reviews of your equine space.  If you haven’t used something in six months, it may be time to donate, consign or toss.  Remember to schedule time for repairs and cleaning.  Regular reviews will keep it manageable and your tack space organized!

Other Tack Space Essentials

Broom & Dustpan, Vacuum

First Aid Kit

Stools / Seating

Tool Kit

Broom & Dustpan or Vacuum

We recommend a dedicated broom & dustpan for the tack room so it’s always handy and cleaner than the one used for sweeping the aisle ways.  Get one with a hole through the handle for easy hanging.  A small vacuum also works great.

First Aid Kit

Multiple First Aid Kits are a great idea and come in many sizes and shapes.  We recommend having three; one each for the barn, trailer and show tack room.

These are suggestions only.  Every responsible horse owner should know at least the basics of equine first aid, own a good equine first aid book and be able to know when to contact your veterinarian.

** Do not administer drugs, especially tranquilizers or sedatives, unless specifically instructed to do so by your veterinarian. **

Stools / Seating

A sturdy stepping stool is an essential for every tack room for reaching, braiding or sitting.  There are many choices from horse specific mounting blocks to products offered in Home Supply stores.  Look for something sturdy that will not tip over easily.  Folding chairs for seating is also important and can be taken from the barn (watching a lesson) to the trailer (for relaxing between classes).

 Tool Kit

A basic tool kit is another essential.  You can find them in different sizes and shapes and are fairly inexpensive.  Buying multiples to keep in the barn and trailer is a good idea.

Nice to Have Pr0ducts

Boot /Glove Dryer

Decorator Touches

Refrigerator

Horse Show Awards Display

Here are a few of our favorite “nice-to-have” products.

Boot / Glove Dryer – so nice to be able to dry out wet boots or gloves.  Many products to choose from.  $20 - $50.

Decorator Touches – whether it’s colors, pictures, awards & ribbons, equine wallpaper border, these touches make your tack space very enjoyable.

Refrigerator – You can purchase a small refrigerator for $100 - $200 or check local classifieds or www.CraigsList.com

Horse Show Awards Display – we work hard for those ribbons and awards.  Show them off.  We installed a thin trim piece 2” from the ceiling and a ½” from the wall to hook ribbons – they are easily moved when you have new ones to add.  Another option is a simple curtain rod with two end hooks.  Neck Ribbons or medals can be hung from hook – either equestrian bridle hooks are simple one or two brass hooks available at any Home Store.
